The University of Sunderland (UOS), is a public academic and research university located in Sunderland, England, UK, established in 1992, which was formerly the Sunderland Technical College since 1901. The UOS today has campuses in Sunderland in North East England, London and Hong Kong. It bears affiliations with the Universities UK, Association of Commonwealth Universities and EQUIS. University of Sunderland received a Silver in Teaching Excellence Framework.
Almost 40% of their students are International Students. The university is popular for its business, media, glass and ceramics and pharmacy courses. The school of medicine was among the five new medical colleges established to balance the distribution of medical institutes across the UK. The university actively collaborates with the community and has set up innovative projects in North England such as SportsByte (a sports publication) and Spark Sunderland (an award-winning, student-made radio station). The University of Sunderland has also developed relations with the industry to orient students toward better career training and facilitate placements especially successful in media and business.
The University has 4 campuses: two in Sunderland, one each in London and Hong Kong and caters to over 20,000 students. University of Sunderland provides undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral and CPD courses.
University of Sunderland comprises of five faculties.
The Faculty of Health Sciences and Wellbeing offers courses in Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Psychology.
The Faculty of Arts and Creative Industries offers courses in Art and Design, Performing Arts, Media, Films and Journalism. They are well-known for the Fine Arts, Glass and Ceramics, Film, Radio, TV and New Media disciplines.
The Faculty of Technology offers Computing and Engineering.
The Faculty of Business, Law and Tourism offers courses in Business management as well as hospitality and tourism. They also have courses in Law.
The Faculty of Education and Society offer courses within the Education discipline.
The UOS has two campuses in Sunderland called the City Campus and the St. Peter’s (aka Sir Tom Cowie) Campus. St Peter Campus has the Institute for International Research in Glass and ceramics, Informatics Centre, lecture theatres, Library, Business Centre, and Media Centre in the school of Arts, Design and Media. City Campus has the Murray Library, The Gateway – a student support centre, Design Centre, Administration Buildings, the CitySpace gym and science complexes. The Design Centre is one of the best in the UK to offer Animation, Graphic Design, Advertising, Fashion and Illustration.
The London campus is located at Canary Wharf – a prime financial centre – offering courses in nursing, business, accounting, tourism and hospitality. The Hong Kong campus is fairly recent, it opened in 2017.
UOS has the Institute of Sports on campus which is a place for students to train and practice either social or competitive sports. UOS has over 40 sports clubs. CitySpace has a gym, fitness suite, physiotherapy and injury centre, climbing wall, sports hall, and other suites.
The sports clubs feature Basketball, Rugby, Football, Badminton, Cheerleading, Cricket, Athletics, Dodgeball, Hockey, Golf, Squash, Rowing, Swimming, Tennis etc. Some special clubs include the Adventure Club, Archery, Equestrian, Fencing, Pole Fitness, Snowsports, Water Polo, etc. Martial arts facilities provided are Aikido, Judo, Jeet Kune Do, Karate, Kickboxing and Self Defence.
SportsByte is a famous media publication by UOS students which publishes sports news from the North East England and UK and has garnered national fame.
UOS students automatically gain membership to the Student’s Union. The Union represents students at the university level and works to assist, advise and support students, arrange campaigns and act as a voice for all members. They conduct all-year events and help students join several UOS clubs and societies.
University of Sunderland has an impressive on-campus library where students can access a vast collection of academic resources comprising of books, e-books, journals, publications, etc. Study spaces are available in the library to facilitate individual or group study. The St. Peter’s Library and Murray Library at City Campus offers flexible learning spaces and collections of digital and print resources. UOS has an online portal for University Library Services.
The University is updated with top-notch IT facilities that include Campus Wi-Fi, internet café, technical operations, online resources and learning modules, and application support services.
UOS has established The Gateway – a one-stop place for all enquiries and student support. The Student Gateway set up the International Student Support Team (ISS) to assist the large proportion of foreign students they receive each year. This University is a popular option for students seeking quality education in North East England. They provide support throughout the course right from visas and immigration, arrival and orientation, accommodation, pre-sessional English, study support to career counselling. They have facilities for scholarships, exchange programs and summer school.
UOS offers accommodation at four halls of residence: Clanny House, Panns Bank, Scotia Quay and The Forge U-Student Village. The rooms range from en-suite single rooms to regular rooms. The accommodation is self-catered with furnished bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens and common areas. Rent is inclusive of utilities and insurance. Services provided include housekeeping, Wi-Fi, 24 hour security. The University halls are fully equipped with laundry facilities. A free campus bus with links to both the campus makes it easy for students to travel. The University helps international students with off-campus living options too.

Alison Walker is a well known Scottish sports broadcaster. Walker took a degree in media and communication studies from University of Sunderland.
Mike Rumbles is a Scottish Liberal Democrat MSP for the North East of Scotland. He was re-elected to the Scottish Parliament during the 2016 election.
