The University of Northampton (UON), located in Northampton, Central England, UK, is a young university established in 2005, which formerly was the Nene College of Higher Education (since 1975). Over these few years it has developed into one of the top 100 universities in the UK. They have achieved this by incorporating industry-oriented curricula, innovative teaching, and technological advancements to ensure world-class education.
The University of Northampton is one of the select Universities in the UK to hold a Gold Rating in Teaching Excellence Framework. It is also the first university in England to be called the Gamechanger Campus in 2012. They have recently opened their £300 million Waterside Campus that has been designed with the latest technological facilities and caters to over 11,500 students.
The University offers undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral and CPD courses. The University has four faculties: Business and Law; Arts, Science and Technology; Health and Society; Education and Humanities. Through these, they offer courses in Engineering, Biological Sciences, Teacher Training and Education, Tourism and Hospitality, Humanities, Social Sciences, Art and Design, Performing Arts, Law and Criminology, Business and Management, Economics, Accounting, Sports and Physical Education, Computing, etc.
The University of Northampton is particularly famed for some fascinating degrees in Fashion, Game Design, Leather, Lift Engineering, Transpersonal Psychology and Waste Management Education. Their Public and Professional Health Programs were ranked 7th in the UK for teaching quality and student satisfaction. UON’s popular disciplines are Business, Fashion and Films.
The University of Northampton has since 2018 relocated to their brand new Waterside Campus featuring integrated learning environments, a new 24/7 library and study centre, a sports pavilion, support for teaching in the 21st century in a ‘green’ campus that is energy-efficient. Including parts of the former Avenue campus, the UON has special centres like the Learning Hub, Creative Hub, Student Village and a new building for the Students’ Union. The novel campus features cutting-edge laboratories, classrooms and studios for research and training, social spaces, eateries and cafes too. The campus is a 15 minutes’ walk to Northampton Town Centre, where students can experience the vibrant city life.
The Innovation Centre for some of UON’s performance disciplines (theatre rehearsals, acting workshops) is located near the Northampton Train Station. The Development Hub, set to open in late 2020, is located 10 minutes away from the Waterside Campus; dedicated to certain areas like Fine Arts, Performance, Pre-sessional English, Music etc.
Sports Facilities
UON’s sports brand known as the Northampton Student Sport competes in BUCS leagues and other competitions. The campus proudly boasts of a well fitted new Sports Pavilion. UON is one of only three UK universities to offer free sports training and services to all students, with access to 35 plus clubs. Gifted students have opportunities for Sports Scholarships too. Sports include gym and physical exercise, badminton, yoga, gymnastics, athletics, cheerleading, cricket, basketball, tennis, rugby, hockey, volleyball, football, squash, swimming, video gaming, etc. The wide range of sports activities ensures that students stay active by practising a sport that fits their interest.
Students’ Union and Student Life
UON offers free membership to a range of clubs and societies including the Students’ Union. They conduct all-year events, formal occasions, winter/summer balls, trips, festivals and other socials. The Students’ Union also assists in solving individual or group issues and acts as a student representative at the University.
Study Facilities
The 24/7 Library and Study Centre provides teachers, researchers, and students with access to a vast collection of academic resources comprising of books, e-books, journals, publications, etc. Study spaces are available in the library and within the colleges sections to facilitate individual or group study.
IT Facilities
The University is updated with top-notch IT facilities that include Campus Wi-Fi, internet café, technical operations, online resources and learning modules, and application support services.
Each year the UON receives about 1000 international students from over 100 nations. One of the best features of UON that make it a popular choice for foreign students is their exemplary ISSS – International Student Support Services. This is overseen by the International Office at the Learning Hub in the Waterside Campus. They assist international students throughout their time at UON.
A programme ‘UON in Your Country’ brings UON representatives to home countries of students overseas to advise and assist with admissions. The ISSS offers support with regards to visas and immigration, arrival and orientation, accommodation, scholarships, dependent’s applications, exchange programs, support for studies like preparatory English Language training, etc. Career counselling and placements are implemented through platforms like Changemaker Hub, Unitemps and Enterprise Boost. UON helps such students with obtaining part-time jobs and opening bank accounts. The UON Students’ Union organizes International Students Mentoring using a buddy scheme.
University accommodation is arranged for students at several halls of residence or privately owned housing at the Waterside Campus, Town Centre and Scholars Green Student Village. The rooms range from high-end en-suite to standard single/twin sharing rooms which students can choose according to their budget. The facilities come with furnished bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, halls and housing services. Additionally, they provide 24 hour security, laundry, housekeeping services and Wi-Fi. If you are looking to live off-campus, the team will be on hand to help international students with off-campus living options too.
