The University of Cumbria is a public academic and research university in the UK. It has its headquarters at Carlisle and several campuses at London, Lancaster, Ambleside and Workington. It was established in 2007. The University offers courses in Health, Business, Art and Design, Education, Humanities and Science. The University of Cumbria is well-known for its niche courses in forestry and conservation.
Not only is the University of Cumbria one of Britain’s modern universities it is also well regarded for having educated professionals since 150 years. The university was created in 2007 from Cumbria Institute of the Arts, St Martin’s College as well as the Cumbrian campus of UCLan. The university boasts of a robust academic strength in healthcare, sports, teacher training and education. It also had a wide range of other courses such as business management, humanities, social science, outdoors, forestry visual and performing arts, law and criminology, science, and land studies. The University of Cumbria also provides education in Medical Imaging, Sports Development, Arts, Law, Education, Leadership and Economic Development. Some other areas of education include the Conservation, Forestry, and the Uplands, and Mental Health and Wellbeing.
The University of Cumbria was built on a model of ‘distributive learning network’ having one main center and several colleges across the county to spread education. The main campus is at Brampton Road in Carlisle. It has the Institute of Arts. The Lancaster campus on Bowerham Road where disciplines of humanities, sports, arts, nursing, social work, etc. are taught. It houses the Sports Centre, a Building for Humanities courses, The Hugh Pollard Lecture Theatre and on-campus student residences. The Ambleside campus is where the courses of forestry, outdoor study, conservation business, leadership and sustainability are taught. At the Workington campus, UOC has a presence at the ‘Energus’ Facility in Lillyhall. The major campuses called Carlisle, Ambleside and Lancaster are a huge part of the University of Cumbria, these campuses are situated in the north west of England. These are dynamic, safe, student-friendly cities and have a lesser than average cost of living. The Lake District located in the region of Cumbria is a popular tourist area and is known for its magnificent landscapes. The teacher-training facility in London is situated in Tower Hamlets, which is home to the Tower of London and super fashionable Brick Lane. The University has access to a wide range of fantastic facilities for the students from IT facilities, sports and fitness to food and drinks. The University has sports facilities for cricket, football, badminton, basketball, netball, rugby, hockey, pool, etc. Most of the University of Cumbria campuses have brilliant sports teams that represent them in the British Universities as well as Colleges Sport leagues. All teams play home games on most Wednesday afternoons across the various University’s sport venues. The University of Cumbria sports teams participate competitively in BUCS and other sports leagues. Through UoC ACTIVE students have access to casual non-competitive sports and exercise training including yoga, Pilates and Zumba.
The UoC Library has an extensive collection of books, e-resources and journals. They include The Barn Library at Ambleside, Brampton Road Library, Fusehill St Library, Harold Bridges Library at Lancaster and the London Campus Library. They offer integrated online library and learning services as well as spaces for individual or group study.
UCSU is the University of Cumbria’s student union that offers student support, hosts events, publishes news on their website, helps students join clubs and societies and acts as a voice for its members. They also publish a magazine called ‘The Squealer’.
The University of Cumbria is equipped with the top-notch IT facilities that include Campus Wi-Fi, internet café, technical operations, online resources and learning modules, and application support services.
The University of Cumbria’s International Student Support offers pre-arrival and on-arrival assistance to overseas students. The Cumbria Mentor system allots a student buddy to international students. There are robust services for internal students. The university offers airport collection from both Newcastle airport as well as Manchester for new international students. Cumbria also conducts an assortment of courses for English language learners across all levels to ensure ease for everyone. They also conduct International Foundation Programme, short courses, pre-sessional programmes, and the MA TESOL. The International Coordinators assist new foreign students with any matter they may face. They host induction programs for new students, set up access to healthcare, disability assistance, career counselling and academic support.
The University of Cumbria has student accommodation facilities at their Ambleside, Lancaster, London and Carlisle locations. They offer a range of rooms to match a student’s budget. The university offers almost 1,100 rooms and halls of residence across all the campuses. They also assist with independent housing. To ease the progress of studies, wi-fi internet is accessible from all the rooms and nearly all students have their individual study bedroom, whilst the kitchen, lounge and the bathroom is shared between the residents. There are various en-suite and a member of the residential group is always available to assist international students on the campus. Additionally, the University can help find privately rented accommodation either in a hall of residence or in University-approved housing. The residences at Ambleside include Fairfield, Wansfell Hall, Fell Court, The Cottages which are all surrounded with mountains and greenery. The Carlisle accommodations include Brampton Road Halls, Denton Student Village and the Carrock Halls. The Wadell Halls are located at Lancaster, a vibrant and green city. The London residences are sourced through London Studentpad, an online student accommodation service.
A number of financial aid options are available under different schemes at the University of Cumbria. There include the Bright Futures Fund, Hadfield Trust Creative Travel Award as well as the Professor Strike Prize for STEM.
