Northumbria University, located right in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne is one of the top Universities in the UK with over 31,000 students. The origins of Northumbria University can be traced to three Newcastle colleges – Rutherford College of Technology, which was started by John Hunter Rutherford in the year 1880 and opened formally in the year 1894 by the Duke of York, the College of Art and Industrial Design and Municipal College of Commerce. The university has two large campuses situated in Newcastle and the other one in London. The City Campus, which is located in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne, is divided into the City Campus East and the City Campus West by the city’s central motorway and is also linked by a £4 million bridge which in the year 2008 was officially opened by former Minister of State for Trade and Investment.
Northumbria University offers 30 of England’s 32 most frequently chosen academic programmes. This University specialises in law and business, computing, environmental science, arts and design, built environment, teacher education, applied healthcare, sports science and psychology.
Northumbria additionally offers clinical courses in law which is accredited by the Law Society and the Bar Council. These allow young graduates direct entry into the profession. The University has invested over £250 million in its campuses to provide students with a world class experience. Northumbria University has a well equipped sports centre and Library amongst a host of other facilities.
The Sports Centre consist of fitness centres, a sprint track, squash courts, six lane 25m swimming pool and numerous outdoor pitches. The main arena at the Sports Central facility can cater upto 3,000 people.
The University Library has an extensive collection of books, ebooks, print and ejournals as well as databases, collection of early historical books and primary digital archives. It has held the Cabinet Office accreditation for Customer Service Excellence since 2010. They have generous opening hours and provide learning spaces to meet your need for quiet study or social or collaborative learning.
New students are offered a ‘meet and greet’ service. The meet and greet officers, who are current students of the university arrange for their transport from Newcastle Airport to their place of accommodation and provide them with a welcome pack which includes information on enrolment and induction events, social events and maps of the campus and city. These sessions are designed to provide them with an opportunity to interact with new students.
International students also have free access to dedicated Student Advisors. The university has a central Central Student Life and Wellbeing Services to provide students access to trained professionals. In a Financial Times survey, Northumbria bagged the top spot for student support.
The university offers accommodation for all second and third year students and postgraduate students and it guarantees accommodation for all first year and foundation students once accepted to the university. They offer a range of accommodation options ranging from catered halls, self catering flats and individual studios both on and off campus. You can choose the building, flat and even the exact room online based on availability.
They have a variety of accommodation options for students requiring wheelchair use and students with hearing and sight difficulties. At Claude Gibb the university provides catered accommodation with meals prepared by the campus caterer, Taste Northumbria.

She is a track cyclist and an Olympic gold medalist and has represented Great Britain and England in several international competitions. Victoria has won nine world titles.

Studied: BA (Hons) Fashion, 1997
Scott is a British fashion designer famous for designing a $5million diamond-encrusted dress worn by singer Samantha Mumba at the Premiere of Spider Man 2.
4. Tunde Baiyewu, vocalist
Studied: BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance, 1992
Tunde is best known as vocalist in the duo, Lighthouse family. In 2004 he embarked on a solo career and released the albums Tunde and Diamond in a rock.
5. Neil Marshall, film director and writer
Studied: BA (Hons) Media, Culture and Society, 1992
Neil is a film director and writer. He has directed two episodes of the HBO series Game Of Thrones and was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series.
