The University of Leeds was established in 1874 as the Yorkshire College of Science. In the year 1884, it merged with the Leeds School of Medicine and then in 1887 became part of the federal Victoria University. With over 36,330 students, it is the 5th largest university in the UK. Over the years, the university has consistently been ranked among the top 5 universities. Popular alumni from this university include Piers Sellers, a NASA astronaut and at least six Nobel laureates. The university is associated with institutions from across the world, actively sharing teaching and research and facilitating staff as well as student exchange programmes. Students studying at University of Leeds have the option of choosing from twinned European universities. It is one of the largest higher education institutions in the United Kingdom and the institute is also part of the Russell Group of leading universities.
